Tell TFL you care about them shelving transformative 2016 plans for Kings Cross

A petition has been started to request that TFL and the Mayor of London keep alive extensive 2016-plans that would have transformed the Kings Cross gyratory into a safer, healthier and better environment. Most Kings Cross residents approved the plans in a consultation in 2016. We wanted it all, and we still want it! (Click here to support the vision)

The plans were crafted after several people had died on our roads and much lobbying by Boris Johnson when he was still London Mayor.

Sadiq Khan has promised to upkeep the plans, subject to funding, but no funding to support the vision has been available five years on. Now TFL wants to change a few junctions only. In 2020 TFL quietly shelved the transformative vision for Kings Cross.

The fatalities that are not that long ago seems to be forgotten, bit only in November 2021, this year, a serious collision between a bus and cyclist reminded all what is at stake, when safety investments over a plan that already went through planning and consultation stages, based on the recognition and study of all identified shortcomings of the Kings Cross roads are withheld. Alongside the fact that Kings Cross roads were and still are amongst the more polluting streets of London, at one stage amongst the highest in London and by implication in teh UK and Europe. Money was spent already over these plans. By shelving them, TFL is in fact admitting that they have been wasting public money.

Those who called for and drafted the 2016 vision were however right. Millions cross through Kings Cross whilst people also live here, many have families with children, some are elderly. Some cross major roads just to go grocery shopping or to school. The Kings Cross gyratory may also be the first bit of London people travelling to London from the North of Europe will experience. It is where the best British traffic and road management should be showcased rather than a solution crafted out of shoestrings.

Acton Street would have seen an extra cycle lane and general calming, whilst other streets would have become slow-moving two-way streets, overhauling all crossings and junctions.

Even if money is in short supply, Kings Cross deserves a full holistic vision that addresses the shortcomings of the one-way gyratory system once and for all.

Temporary Advise on Speeding Vehicles on Kings Cross Gyratory Roads

TFL has sent us some temporary advise, what people should do to yet again report fast or speeding vehicles. Below I attach their full advise:

“The Mayor of London and TfL are committed to delivering a Vision Zero approach to road danger reduction, which will rid London’s roads of death and serious injury. TfL funds, operates and maintains London’s safety camera network, which includes speed, red light and average speed camera systems. These help prevent a significant number of deaths and serious injuries each year.

Safety cameras are only one of the ways to tackle speed-related deaths and serious injuries on our roads. We work in partnership with the London boroughs to implement physical engineering measures to encourage compliance with lower speed limits. Using this approach, we’re also in the process of reducing speed limits on almost 150km of the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN).

We’re also working to deliver other speed management initiatives such as the development of a dedicated Speed Enforcement Team and Community Roadwatch, which aims to reduce speeding in residential areas, and gives local residents the opportunity to work side by side with their local police teams and use speed detection equipment to identify speeding vehicles in their communities.

To take part in Community Roadwatch, or to suggest a residential area where there are community concerns around speeding, members of the public can contact:, stating the borough where they live. Enquiries will be forwarded to the relevant local MPS Safer Transport Team, who will be in touch.

The public can report dangerous, illegal, or antisocial road user behaviour directly to the police via their online reporting tool, RoadSafe London. Every report helps the police and TfL to understand where and when bad road user behaviour takes place. Car Speeds in Acton Street, Swinton Street, Kings Cross Road and the rest of the gyratory

Daniel from Acton Street has asked councillors and TfL to look into the question of the outstanding changes, in order to calm and humanize streets affected by the decades old gyratory system.

A consultation in 2016 suggested several changes, but so far, they were not implemented, with the argument that it could not be done due to HS2 construction. Amongst others some of our streets were to become emergency parking lots for HS2 construction site lorries.

Meanwhile traffic has been slowed to 20 Miles an hour on the Southern edge of Kings Cross Road, but not elsewhere. Changes were also implemented in relation to the cycle path link from Farringdon up to St. Pancras and the Tavistock Place cycle lanes. But on the main roads of the gyratory, motor traffic continues unchanged to often exceed the existing 30 miles speed limit, such as on Kings Cross Road, Pentonville Road, Acton Street and Swinton Street, with stretches used by some for brief bouts of speeding, regardless of the fact that in some of the streets residents live, amongst them children and elderly persons. The width and straightness of parts of the streets attracts drivers and riders to do so.

During the pandemic the mayor of London has taken some unexpected traffic reducing and calming steps across London including in Camden, but the gyratory system has been left almost untouched, in spite of the consultation and ready to implement suggestions by TfL itself.

TfL has now been asked why Kings Cross residents have to continue to wait for the smallest of all improvements, an extension of the 20 miles speed limit in this very built up area,where there there are many people also on their feet and bikes. The question will also be posed by AM Andrew Dismore to the mayor, most likely in an assembly session in October 2020.

The Islington councillor Paul Convey, also supports the asking of these questions, given the more recent changes on streets such as Euston Road.

On the positive side, Chris Gardener, who is Camden’s responsible officer for the electric vehicle charging point infrastructure, has written to Daniel, that Acton Street may receive an extra fast charging point on the Southern side of the Street. It is not a guarantee, but a need has been recognised. The lanterns on the streets at Kings Cross are apparently mostly unsuitable for the slower charging points. New EV charging points on the Camden side get currently erected in accordance to need and demand. There are more charging points at the moment in the Islington administered zones near Kings Cross than in the Camden zones.
